The Mammal Society is currently preparing a new atlas of British mammals. At the moment, there are many blank spaces on the maps for Argyll, often for common and widespread species, which it would be good to fill in if possible.

Follow these links for draft maps (in Google maps) showing which hectads (10km squares) in Argyll have records of mammal species since 2000.

Common shrew Brown long-eared bat
Water shrew Common pipistrelle
Mole Soprano pipistrelle
Hedgehog Roe deer
Rabbit Red deer
Brown hare Sika deer
Mountain hare Fallow deer
Field vole Wildcat
Bank vole Stoat
Water vole Weasel
Wood mouse Pine marten
Brown rat American mink
Grey squirrel Badger
Red squirrel Otter
Daubenton's bat Fox
Natterer's bat Common seal

I've also prepared a document showing which species have been recorded for each hectad and which species are (potentially) missing. This could be useful for checking up on how well your home hectad is recorded. You can download this document here.

Please help me fill in the blanks by submitting records of mammals to iRecord or by mailing them to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
